Recently in the garden there's been a horrible smell wafting about. I was thinking either the drains had backed up or Noodles had left a pair of his dirty socks somewhere. It turned out to be that the previous owners have planted a strange, alien like plant in the garden that wafts the horrible smell around when it flowers to attract flies for pollination. I found out this plant is rather aptly named considering the smell, a corpse flower. They can grow huge and some only flower for a couple of days every ten years.
Our one seems to be a long green stem that's opened up at the top with big purple leaves and a long stork part and it drives the flies crazy, they love it.
I don't have a pic of it but here's a pic of a different one to give you some idea what it's like. I think you'll agree it's one strange plant, kinda like something from the day of the triffids.

A letter for the previous house owners about holidays in Asia arrived a while ago so I have a sneaky suspicion they either sneaked some home or managed to get some here in the Uk after seeing them abroad. There's actually another one at the bottom of the garden too that's less developed than the first one, so the smell might be twice as bad next year haha. I'm pretty sure it would'nt be native to this country so I don't think it would have just grown here wild.
I seem to remember a Simpsons episode where the whole town goes to see a flower and when it opens it releases a cloud of gas. I also remember something like this on the news, I think it was possibly Kew gardens where the flower was blooming.
If it starts saying feed me then it's not too bad. I'm in trouble if it starts singing it though, I'm not a big fan of musicals :D

Wow! you're the ONLY person I've ever heard of to have one! Was it wild? I assume so as you didn't seem to know what the stench was. (in my case it's be my workboots but that may be a bit of tmi, lol) It stirs a vague recollection watching a vid on one, a hUGE one that as you said opens every few years. This one is well known and a tourist attraction. I'm no horticuturist but I think it's elated to pitcher plants. May serve well for zombie bait as wel...hmmm...if it is rotten brains that is...Will you get pics of it posted? My advice, if it starts saying FEED ME Wolfsbane, run!..and an intriguing random observation that a person with screen tag Wolfsbane would have a plant life oddity in their back yard. In the word of Nathan Explosion...Brutal!
