I've just finished reading 'The God Delusion' by Richard Dawkins, and it's a good read. I wouldn't say I was a complete athiest but he makes a good point about relgions being the root of all evil.
An example of this was in the sunday times this weekend. In Israel a palestinian man was convicted of rape after having consensual sex with a woman who thought he was a fellow jew. He was sentanced to 18 months in Jail for 'rape by deception'.
Apparently he met the woman and presented himself as a jewish bachelor looking for a serious relationship. They then had cosensual sex. it was only after she found out that he was an arab (I wonder how??!!) that she filed a complaint.
The judges concluded: "If she hadn't thought the accused was a jewish batchelor.... she would not have co-operated."
Madness!

I mean...when I was younger, a guy told me that he had a hotted up V8...turns out he didn't, but I could've had sex with him because I like big motors.
Are non-religious cases able to do this?

Israeli law has something called rape by deception which is different to a physical act of rape.
I think that if someone is so dishonest about something that it can be a form of rape as the consent being given to have sex is based on the lie that came before it so therefore is'nt true consent. That's the part I believe to be right although how you judge the severity of the lie to be worthy of jail time I don't know. I'm sure a lot of men and women don't tell the truth when it comes to casual sex or even long term reltionships but at what point does the lie become big enough or cause enough disgust to be judged.
The fact that he has been found guilty because he lied about his ethnicity is where the racism issue comes in. She said she consented as she thought as a single Jewish batchelor it could lead to a long term relationship and that would'nt be possible if he is Arabic. Having casual sex with someone you've just met on a rooftop does'nt sound like a way of meeting potential long term marriage partners but hey, that's just me.
Totally get where you're coming from though Dudie.

in my opinion a lot of things get said and done in the name of God which are nothing to do with it,I think its shameful this man being done for rape just because he was dishonest...not nice but not deserving of a jail sentence.......this does everyone who has ever been raped a huge diservice as its truly horrendous and this woman should be ashamed of herself.

all I want is to be more like me,less like you.....
Yes you have a point about religion just being a banner to group under, just like a football team or whatever. However religion is far more insidious and if you take the bible as a moral code to live by, then you should definately read Dawkins book.
Yes I agree he was sleazy, but there is no way you can call it rape as the woman consented, no matter what she found out later.

In my opinion I don't think it is madness. I'm not religious but I do understand that some religions and ethnicities are very specific about who they have relationships with.
Why could'nt the guy have been honest about himself? Lying to her to get in her pants is wholly dishonest and I guess can be called a form of rape. It all depends how the woman in question reacts to it and in this case if the woman is really offended by it then good on her for taking the sleazy bastard down.
I don't see religion in itself as evil, it's the human being interpreting it in their own way that can lead to evil. If there's a difference between groups of people chances are at some point it'll lead to violence, it's human nature. Be that different religion, skin colour, race, down to what clothes you wear, it's all just an excuse.
